Marianne Simonin is a French artist who works mostly in oils and charcoals to explore symbolism and the female energy. Her inspiration comes from being mostly attuned to synchronicity and nature. By connecting with the primordial elements her compositions move beyond landscape reproductions and seek to express emotions or states of mind. The act of walking in nature as one moves step by step along a path, and the awareness of one’s inner world has contributed to her new series on crossroads.
In 2011 Marianne explored a very different path, enrolling full time at Middlesex University to study Ayurvedic medicine. After completing her Master degree, she returned to her art practice, and felt that the change that had occurred within her during her studies made her see new opportunities in life. However it also highlighted the dilemma of choosing which path or direction to take with her art practice and with her own private life. By developing a series of charcoal drawings based on ‘crossroads’ she hoped to uncover hidden messages. Initially starting from conventional landscapes she started deconstructing them by cutting her drawings and rearranging the pieces to create new landscapes. New dynamics emerged showing obstacles and barriers as well as opened paths (see examples) The process of manifestation and destruction takes an important place during her creative process as well as the constant tuning in with the higher forces of creation.
Another recurrent theme in Marianne’s work is the exploration of Tantric symbolism. It is the secret message behind them that interests her. Her fascination towards the 'soul' revealing itself through the eyes has often let her explore also portraiture in order to access emotions and thoughts hiding behind expressions. The titles she uses are part of the creative process, and in many occasions they initiate the work. At times, her technique may involve incantation in a ritualistic approach while working on spiritual themes. Words then filter onto the canvas, as repetitive mantras, and merge as part of the composition.
Marianne frequently travels alone to remote areas of India or other countries to find inspiration, spending many days in silence, observing, while moving from place to place.
